Wednesday started by tying up a few loose ends. We had a couple of groups that needed to finish up looking at probes from yesterday so we spent 20 minutes doing that.
Then we got their brains working by doing an engineering challenge where students had to suspend a paper clip as far off as desk (vertically or horizontally) as possible using only 2 straws, 2 pieces of spaghetti, 2 elastics, and 1 mailing label. Its always fund to see the how well students work together to come up with some great innovations in kitchen engineering.
Then we started STATS day. Do do this we, had the kids blow bubbles (blowing bubbles, one of the best summer activities) using solutions of different dilutions (say that five times fast). This is great because they get a lot of data fast, and they did it with smile.
After they got their data, we had them use the minis and enter it into an Excel spread sheet. Excel is a program they need to get familiar when doing data analysis. Students need to be able to go beyond the basics of data entry. They need to know how to input formulas, do statistics, and make appropriate graphs to be able to analyze data. So the warm afternoon was spent learning how to make Box and Whiskers plots in Excel and then performing t-tests to see if diluting the bubble solution made a significant impact on the number of bubbles they could blow.
It was a lot of new stuff for the campers on a hot afternoon, so we cooled down with some freeze pops while working.
Another happy camper at the end of another great day!
